Subject: [Advisers] Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Awareness Week

The Committee Organizing Rape Education (CORE) would like to let you all
know about next weeks line up of exciting events. Not just a student event
the Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Awareness (SARVA) Week April
4-8, 2005, is for all UW community members. It's an opportunity for us all
to raise awareness and take a stand against violence.

Throughout the week we will have several anti-violence campaigns:

Take Back the Night Rally Tuesday, April 5, 6:00 p.m. featuring Alix Olson HUB
Auditorium (free admission)

The Take Back the Night Rally historically symbolizes and resists many
women’s sense of increased vulnerability at night. Today, the rally takes
place around the world to raise awareness of the impacts of sexual
violence for all members of society. If not for you, in support of all the
partners, family members and survivors of sexual assault and relationship
violence. The event will feature keynote speakers Professor Kari Tupper,
Senior Lecturer in Women Studies and Comparative History of Ideas and Max
Walsh, Community Advocate with Northwest Network of Bi, Trans, Lesbian and
Gay Survivors of Abuse and JoJo from Asian Pacific Islander Women and
Family Safety Center followed by an Open Mic speak-out for students,
faculty and staff. Headlining this year's event Alix Olson will be
performing her spoken word poetry.

If not for yourself....

This campaign asked campus community members to write statements about why
they are involved in anti-violence work and personal testimonials
regarding sexual assault and relationship violence. We are highlighting
these responses in a poster campaign which will be distributed on sandwich
boards throughout campus. We received several powerful responses from
students faculty and staff which will also be on display at the Take Back
the Night Rally.

The Washington State Silent Witness Exhibit honors 30 women murdered in
1995 due to domestic violence. The exhibit includes 30 life- size
two-dimensional figures which will be on display on the HUB Lawn. Each
figure carries a badge naming the women memorialized and brief information
regarding her murder. The Silent Witness Exhibit will be located on the
HUB Lawn.

“Fear: A project on rape and recovery” will be displayed in the HUB Art
Gallery from April 4-15, 2005. According to the artist, Tim Matsui, “Fear
is a documentary project combining both photo and radio journalism in a
video production to tell personal stories of sexual violence. Not simply
an exercise in rape recollection, FEAR documents real people coping with
the lasting effects of sexual assault. The purpose of the project is to
build an understanding and compassionate community less likely to silence
survivors”.
