Black Love in Literature

Featuring Authors: Laurinda D. Brown, Travis Hunter and Edwina
Martin-Arnold

Thursday, May 18, 2006

7pm at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center

104 17th Ave. S. and Yesler Way

Seattle, WA

“My goal is to help others understand men better -- why we do what we do.

That goes for males, too. Just because you are over eighteen, doesn't
make you a man." Travis Hunter

“I write about life…not lifestyles. I firmly believe that one day we will
love one another

not for what we are but who we are.” Laurinda D. Brown

Chocolate Friday “. . . is really a book about self-discovery disguised
as a romance novel.

The main character, Olivia Anderson, is about to have the ride of her
life,

and the neat thing is the reader gets to go along with her.” Edwina
Martin-Arnold

Black Love in Literature will feature a panel of authors tackling the
complex and provocative subject of the depiction of Black love and
relationships within literature. Each author, chosen for their unique
literary approach to topics ranging from romance to erotica will provide
their own perspective on how Black relationships are depicted in
literature.

The CD Forum wants to give the topic of love, and in particular black
love, a full and engaging exploration, especially as these topics relate
to African-American culture. This discussion will be a celebration of
African-American relationships in literature and the wide range of
authors broaching this topic in their writing. Join the CD Forum and
moderator Nisi Shawl, author and critic and our panelist of authors
Laurinda D. Brown (2005 Lambda Literary Award Finalist), Travis Hunter
(ESSENCE® Bestselling Author) and Edwina Martin-Arnold (Harlequin Romance
Label) as we tackle these questions and discuss the topic of Black love
in literature in a realistic and open way.

Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $7 for CD Forum
members/students/seniors.

Order tickets on-line at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4246 or

One Person, One Camera, One Partner- Three Stories Film Festival

Emerging Director’s Reception

Saturday, May 27, 2006 6:00pm – 8:00pm

Rainier Valley Cultural Center

Emerging Director’s Reception and Multi-Media Presentations for Imagine
Cinema’s ReelYouth: One Person, One Camera, One Partner- Three Stories.
an evolutionary multi media program designed with three objectives in
mind: 1) To Recover through history the identities of the African and
Native Americans establishing a platform for learning 2) To Self Discover
through objective comparison to create a basis of understanding where
they will be encouraged to journal, question and think; and 3) To
Re-Define who they are in this society and life from a positive base
thereby creating a positive foundation. This approach integrates media,
technology and art to bring youth into focus on issues critical and
common between diverse and often misunderstood populations and their
commonalities between each other.

Youth members will be introduced and present their final project, a mini
documentary– “Telling their own stories” in a film festival to the
Seattle community. This event expresses their commitment, dedication and
passion to share what it means to be a part of ReelYouth.

For more information contact Stephanie Cholmondeley, Director, Imagine
Cinema 206-525-0466.
