Streetcars and Canals at the Center of the Universe
With Helen Divjak, author of "Seattle’s Fremont," and long-time “Fremonster” and one of the founding members of the Fremont Historical Society, Erik Pihl.
Take a stroll down one of Seattle’s engineering icons – the Fremont Canal. Learn about how the canal altered the city’s commerce, urban development and landscape, as well as about how the introduction of streetcars in the late years of the nineteenth century dramatically altered one of Seattle’s first suburbs. The walk ends deliciously with a tour of Fremont’s own Chocolate Factory – Theo Chocolate!

Golden Gardens Tour
With local historian Roger van Oosten and arborist Elizabeth G. Walker.
Enjoy a tour of one of Seattle's most beautiful beaches and the surrounding environs. Discover the park's beginnings as a jewel in the Olmsted's plan for Seattle, as well as its growth in the 1930’s through the work of the government's Civilian Conservation Corps. Also learn about the recent shoreline improvements, and discuss the challenges currently facing the park. The tour will conclude with a picnic on the beach. NOTE: Please wear comfortable hiking shoes and plan to arrive early – parking is limited. Additional parking is available at two lots above the railroad tracks, to the east of the park.

Audubon is subject of new American Masters episode on PBS
On September 22, MOHAI opens a stunning exhibit of work by John James Audubon. Learn more about this intriguing man and his legacy in an episode of PBS’s “American Masters” scheduled to air July 25 on KCTS – “John James Audubon, Drawn from Nature.” Check local listings for exact time. Note: Richard Rhodes, author of the biography John James Audubon, The Making of an American, served as a consultant on the film. He will deliver a lecture at MOHAI on October 12.

Call for Presentations
The Pacific Northwest Historians Guild welcomes proposals for sessions, panels, papers and other presentations for the 23rd annual conference, to be held at Seattle’s Museum of History & Industry, March 1, 2008. For a list of possible topics and more details, click here. The Guild encourages a wide variety of presenters; Guild audiences include journalists, educators, historians, historical society members, students and people with a history interest. Proposals should include a title, presenter contact information, brief presenter biography, and a paragraph describing the presentation. Submissions should be postmarked by October 1, 2007, and mailed to:

COMING IN AUGUST!
MOHAI to premiere excerpts from Ken Burns series, “The War”
This fall, PBS will air “The War," the new series by renowned documentary filmmaker, Ken Burns. Burns focuses on four American towns and presents the ways World War II affected the citizens, both those who served in the military and those who remained at home. MOHAI, in partnership with KCTS, will present excerpts from the series to be followed by a panel discussion on WWII veterans’ experiences and a reception. The event is free to the public. KCTS will also be collecting stories from local veterans as part of the project they are developing around “The War.”
