*Tuesday, Jan. 29*: "Wobblies on the Waterfront: Interracial Unionism in
Progressive-Era Philadelphia" -- Prof. Peter Cole (Western Illinois
University) will discuss his new book at the University Bookstore at
7:00 pm.
*Friday, Feb. 8*: Prof. Richard Freeman (Harvard University) will
provide the plenary address at the Challenges to Fair Trade Conference,
from 3:30-5:00 pm, location TBA.

*The intent of this conference is to educate the university community
about the issues involved in implementing fair trade, particularly in a
university environment. Each of the scholars who is attending has
something interesting to say about implementing fair trade. They've
studied campaigns or monitoring or supply chains. They've thought about
how to use consumer power to bring about change in the ways workers are
paid or treated. The invitees represent a range of disciplines and
research emphases.
The conference is sponsored by The Daniel J. Evans School of Public
Affairs, the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies, the Global Business
Center, the Institute for the Study of Ethnicity, Race and Sexuality,
the West Coast Poverty Center, and the UW Licensing Advisory Committee.*

Speakers:
Richard Freeman *(Harvard) has published over 300 articles on a wide
range of subjects including global labor standards, the scientific
workforce, the economics of crime, how the internet is transforming
labor movements, and historical spurts in the growth of labor unions.

Richard Locke *(MIT) studies Nike's response to NGO pressures to address
labor standards of Nike contractors.*
Nelson Lichtenstein *(UC Santa Barbara) is the editor of "Wal-Mart: The
Face of Twenty-First-Century Capitalism." He will be discussing Wal-Mart
procurement in China at the Conference.*
Gay Seidman *(UW Madison) researches citizens, markets and transnational
activism. *
April Linton *(UC San Diego) researches the movement to promote coffee
production that is sustainable for workers and the environment.*

Tuesday, Feb. 12*: Actor Ian Ruskin will perform "From Wharf Rats to
Lords of the Docks" depicting the life and struggles of International
Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) founder, Harry Bridges. Performance
will be at 7:30pm in Meany Studio Theater on the UW Seattle campus. The
event is free and open to the public, but union members are encouraged
to RSVP to the Bridges Center to reserve seats for this performance.
