Opportunities in the Labor Movement
The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees
(AFSCME) has one of the most dynamic union organizing programs in the
country. We are looking to recruit student activists who want to be an
important part of building the labor movement. Listed below are our
opportunities for students who are passionate about grassroots
organizing, workers' rights and progressive social change.
Union alternative SPRING break is a program for students interested in
learning about the labor movement and the work of union organizing.
Participants travel to a union organizing campaign for five days of
intensive classroom and field training. Program participants will be
provided with lodging and transportation during the week as well as a
$125. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation
to the campaign site.
2008 Alternative Break Dates: Spring Break Session 1 March 2 - 6, 2008.
Session 2 March 16 - 20. Deadline to apply is Feb. 1, 2008. Break Sites
to be announced. For more information and to apply, visit
www.unionbreak.org or email rpanciera at afscme.org. Open to seniors and
graduates interested in a career in the labor movement.
AFSCME Organizer-in-Training program is an intensive training program
designed for participants to learn the fundamentals of building worker
power through union organizing. Organizers-in-Training come from
diverse backgrounds of work, organizing, and academic experience.
Organizers-in-Training learn the nuts and bolts of an organizing
campaign from talking one-on-one with workers, to developing leaders,
and organizing direct actions. Candidates are placed on active
campaigns with experienced organizers who provide mentoring and
one-on-one training throughout the program. Salary starts at $34,212
with family health coverage, a car allowance, twelve paid holidays,
401k, pension plan and more. Women and people of color are strongly
encouraged to apply. For more information, visit
www.afscmeorganizers.org. Open to Seniors and Graduates.
AFSCME/UNCF Union Scholars Internship provides students of color with an
opportunity to work on the front lines of the labor movement. Students
will participate in a variety of activities that may include helping
non-union workers organize a union at their job, building AFSCME's
grassroots political program or conducting research for organizing
campaigns. The best part is that you'll have a chance to make a
difference in people's lives. The ten-week internship provides a
stipend of $4,000, on-site housing, and an opportunity to attend a
week-long orientation and training at Harvard University. In addition,
participants who successfully complete their internships are eligible to
receive an academic scholarship of up to $5000. For more information
and to apply, visit www.afscmeorganizers.org and click on AFSCME/UNCF

*UNITE HERE*
LEARN UNION ORGANIZING SKILLS WITH ONE OF NORTH AMERICA'S MOST
PROGRESSIVE AND SUCCESSFUL UNIONS!
Across North America, hotel workers are rising -- organizing to lift one
another out of poverty. Housekeepers, dishwashers, cooks are standing
together to win the right to organize a union and improve their lives.
They need you -- your energy, your education, your enthusiasm -- to join
them in that fight.
UNITE HERE is a progressive labor organization, representing
approximately 440,000 workers in the hotel, textiles, industrial
laundry, gaming and food service industries in North America. These
service industries employ large numbers of women, recent immigrants and
people of color. UNITE HERE is committed to raising the living standards
of the people who do some of the most "invisible" work in North America:
the workers who clean hotel rooms, wash hospital sheets and serve food
in cafeterias and airports.
UNITE HERE is offering a six-week, paid Hotel Workers Rising Internship
for passionate student leaders who will spend their summer in the
struggle for justice. Internship sites will be based in major cities
across the U.S. and Canada.
The Hotel Workers Rising Internship will run in two sessions:
June 2nd-July 11th, 2008 and
July 21st-August 29th, 2008
Stipend: $450.00 per week.
Participants are responsible for their own housing.
