1 12-JUL-1995 14:47 Pantani takes Tour stage

   L'ALPE D'HUEZ, France, July 12 (UPI) -- Italy's mountain specialist Marco
Pantani took the 10th stage of the Tour of France Wednesday, but Miguel
Indurain of Spain hung onto his leader's yellow jersey.
Pantani launched an attack eight miles from the finish line on the final
hill climb and came home 1 minute 20 seconds ahead of Indurain at the end of
the 100-mile stage from Aime to L'Alpe d'Huez in the French Alps.
It was the 25-year-old's first stage win in the Tour de France.
Switzerland's Alex Zuelle, who won Tuesday's first Alpine stage, finished
in the same group as Indurain and preserved his second place in the overall
standings.
Russia's Yevgeny Berzin, Italy's Maurizio Fondriest and Frenchman Jacky
Durand were among the more prominent riders to abandon the tour Wednesday.
Thursday's 11th stage takes the riders 105 miles from Bourg-d'Oisans to
Saint-Etienne.
