2 16-JUL-1995 12:50 Pantani takes second Tour stage
GUZET-NEIGE, France, July 16 (UPI) -- Italy's Marco Pantani launched an
attack just 26 miles after the start to take the 14th stage of the Tour de
France Sunday, the first of three gruelling stages in the Pyrenees.
Miguel Indurain of Spain, celebrating his 31st birthday, retained his
yellow jersey as overall leader after finishing third, 2 minutes, 31 seconds
behind Pantani, the same time as second-placed Laurent Madouas of France.
Indurain, bidding for his fifth successive Tour de France victory, widened
his lead slightly over Switzerland's Alex Zulle in the overall standings.
Zulle came home fourth, two seconds behind Indurain, but ahead of Italian Ivan
Gotti and Denmark's Bjarne Riis.
Local hero Laurent Jalabert, who had climbed to third place overall after
suffering an accident early on in the race, finished seventh Sunday, 3
minutes, 24 seconds behind the winner and slipped further back.
It was the second stage win in this year's tour for Pantani, 25, after
taking Wednesday's stage in the Alps.
The 99-mile stage from St. Orens de Gameville to Guzet Neige was run under
fog and drizzle.
