CAUTERETS, France, July 18 (Reuter) - The American Motorola team of Fabio
Casartelli said on Tuesday their riders would continue in the Tour de France
despite the death of the Italian after a fall in the 15th stage.
Motorola spokesman Paul Sherwen said the riders had met team manager Jim
Ochowicz and had decided they would stay in the race.
"They felt they wanted to carry on in his memory," Sherwen said. "It was
the riders' own decision."
Sherwen said Casartelli's body would be flown back to Italy on Wednesday
and arrangements were being made for a funeral on Thursday.
Race director Jean-Marie Leblanc said the Tour would be represented at the
funeral by its president Jean-Claude Killy and five-times winner Bernard
Hinault.
He said one minute's slence would be observed in Casartelli's memory at
the start of the 16th stage in Tarbes on Wednesday.
Leblanc said there was no question of stopping the Tour. "There is a
saying that the show must go on," he said. "It's the same in sport. We are a
big circus and we have to carry on."
