Subject: Boston Cyclocross Race Summary, Northwest Perspective
Boston Super Cup #1 Race Report from a Northwest perspective.
The first National Cyclocross race of the year.
Lets put it this way:
Elite men #2 Steve Larsen, LL Bean, Bend OR
Elite women #1 Ann Grande, Redline, Seattle WA
Espoir Men #2 Jed Sheckler, CBC/The Valley, Olympia WA
Junior Men #2 Dameion Donias, Redline, Tacoma WA
Masters Men #3 Tim Rutledge, Redline, Seattle WA
Masters Women #1 Katie Blincoe, Redline, Seattle WA
Jesse Riel, John Flack also had good races. Add Jonathan Sundt and Dan
Norton this weekend in NY for round #2, and watch the sparks fly! The
Northwest was hot, hot, hot this weekend.
The crowds were HUGE in Boston, lets make the same thing happen here. Start
telling your family, friends and co-workers to mark their calenders,
MARYMOOR PARK SUPER CUP, Saturday November 21st. The rest of the country
will be here trying to make noise in OUR HOUSE, lets make sure we can't hear
them.
Quickly...
Women:
The best race of the day was the Women's elite. It came down to a nail
biter finish between Ann Grande and Carmen Richardson. Ann rode like a
seasoned road pro and sat on Carmen the entire last lap and looked for the
perfect place to put the winning move on. She found it with about 1/4 mile
to go and hit the afterburners and opened up a nice 3 second gap and held it
all the way to the line. Perfect race tactics and execution. The crowd was
on the edge of their seats.
Masters Men:
Tim Rutledge had a bad start and found himself back with the juniors after
the first lap. He then summoned up the power of Zeus and bridged solo back
up to the front pack of 5 and proceeded to put the hurt on them for a lap.
He was countered by Paul Curly and Justin (junior who would win the race)
and chased well, but just couldn't reel them back in. Awesome bridge and a
very solid ride for Tim.
Juniors:
Dameion Donias was nuclear the first lap and went through all the masters
and found himself in the 3rd group from the front. After this Herculean
effort he rode steady a lap and then began his feeding. He swallowed up
nearly all the rest of the field and just kept closing gaps and getting to
the next guy and finished 2nd overall in the junior field. A victory for
our young stallion.
Elite/Masters Women:
Katie Blincoe started with all guns blazing and ignited the first split and
selected 6 of the top women for the first lap. Katie and Ann traded turns
at the front establishing the break, and then Katie let a little gap open
for Jenn Dial and Ann to slip away. Katie knew that Ann could probably beat
Jenn, so that was a good pairing. Katie continued to try and stave off
Carmen, but she finally escaped and bridged up to Ann. Katie battled
valiantly till the end, showing good form and solid conditioning and
finished 6th for elite, 1st for Masters women.
Espoirs:
Jed Sheckler won "fighter of the day" award. His start was like the junior
men, they staged them behind the elite and the course was twisty and turny
right away, and Jed was around 30th at the first lap. The pace at the front
was absolutely blistering. With a bad start in this race, it is game over.
The best Jed could do was chase, and chase he did. He ate, and clawed and
scrapped his way up through group after group and didn't stop till the end,
where he outsprinted the only guy who could stay with him through his
odyssey. 16th Elite, 2nd Espoir. It was Rocky Balboa till the end.
Thats all for now, remember to come out November 21st to spacious Marymoor
Park for the Seattle Super Cup. A guaranteed good show, for FREE!!! Elite
women is 12:15pm and men is 1:45pm.
Check out www.marymoor.veldrome.org or www.bikeride.com for more info.
Cheers,
Craig Undem
