Ride Leaders

As newly appointed ride/training coordinator, I’m looking for some of the
returning Huskies to step up and lead some of the weekend rides. I
certainly can’t guarantee that I’ll be at every ride, but there are enough
of us that someone should be able to show the new riders some of the regular
routes. So for anyone who will be showing up regularly, please let me know
what dates you plan on showing up so I can make sure all the rides are
covered. For the remainder of the quarter I think that rides will be
determined in a semi-democratic fashion based on who shows up, but starting
in January I think the ride lengths will be somewhat more predetermined, in
order that people can get enough mileage in before the race season. There
was also some discussion at the meeting about doing a few rides that don’t
necessarily start from the HUB, just to add some variety. There may be one
or two of these “special” rides this fall—I’ll announce them a few weeks
ahead of time so we can arrange to have enough cars to get to the start.

Tyler mentioned a few things that people need to do before coming on rides,
and I’ll just reiterate them here for anyone who wasn’t there. Basically,
be adequately prepared for the weather, both physically and equipment-wise.
That means full fenders with buddy flaps—the seatpost-attached half-fenders
that keep the spray off your back (affectionately known as f*&k-you fenders)
are *not* acceptable. Have adequate/proper clothing—tights, booties,
waterproof gloves, hats, jackets, etc. Do not wear any sort of cotton
whatsoever! Polypro is always good, as is wool. Make sure your tires have
decent tread and not too many cuts, and bring a pump, tubes, and patch kit.
Check your tires frequently this time of year—wet tires pick up glass much
easier, and can cause punctures if you don’t brush the debris off your tires
regularly. And finally, always bring a fair amount of food with you, as
well as a little money for emergencies/coffee stops. If you have questions
about any of this stuff, ASK! The UW bike shop crew of Busto and company is
a good resource, or you can e-mail me at bikeben at u.washington.edu
<mailto:bikeben at u.washington.edu> . Please, please, PLEASE, come properly
prepared to the team rides. It will be a much more pleasant experience for
everyone if we don’t have to stop 20 times each ride for various problems.
We’ll cut you a little bit of slack, but you’ll see how quickly you can get
ostracized if you don’t put on fenders soon

I’m fairly sure that there will be people at the HUB on Saturday at 9am, I’m
not sure about Sunday. If anyone wants to volunteer to lead Sunday, post a
message so that people can plan accordingly. I heard some sort of rumor
from Blake about riding on Friday since it’s a holiday, but this hasn’t been
confirmed. And once again, potential ride leaders, please contact me about
dates so that I can set up a schedule. This includes weekday rides if you
plan on doing them regularly.

See ya out on the road,

Ben Leung
