I know there was some interest in amateur teams. I wanted to let you guys
know how i feel about being on a team other than the Huskies, since i am on
one. The Huskies are probably one of the best amateur teams in the nw. We
had nearly 60 dues paying members last year and 20 or so raced during road,
about 10 cyclocross, and we had a huge increase in track, and don't forget
Angela beating pros on the mtn. bike. The Huskies primarily will support
riders at collegiate specific events, but I am open to working/ supporting
people in the non-road disciplines at amateur/pro races because of the lack
of collegiate events.
Why would you want to join an amateur team? If this is your first year
racing and you think that you want to focus on the collegiate road season in
the spring and maybe do some races into the summer around washington, then
joining an amateur team is probably not the way to go. Keep in mind that the
huskies are an amateur team and back in the day when the huskies were
dominant - like we are now - they all raced together year round. The club
started to die down once everyone joined outside teams.
If you want to focus on the big races - non-collegiate - in the late spring
and early summer in wa + or, and you think you will be a cat. 3 or better by
the end of the season, then maybe you want to join an amateur team in
addition to the huskies.
I will be racing amateur events in the Recycled kit, but i will probably not
train with them at all. The Huskies, our conference and collegiate racing
in general are all growing right now, and you need to be part of the
revolution. just kidding. I just want you guys to enjoy riding and racing,
and for me the Huskies has been the ideal team for learning about and loving
the sport of cycling. anyway, here's the info.
Luke

Hey cyclists:
Finding the right team is crucial to your training & racing, and every fall
Northwest Women's Cycling helps match teams with new riders by organizing
the Meet the Teams Rides in the Seattle area. This year, rides begin on
Saturday September 17 and run through November. (See schedule below.)
Why join a team?
Joining a team gives you a huge advantage for the upcoming racing season.
The off-season training rides are when teams ride together, learn from and
motivate each other, and may even start developing a strategic approach for
the upcoming season. You will learn a great deal about training and racing
by attending team rides and getting to know your teammates. By March, you
should be ready to start racing!
Why join a team now?
The racing season starts as early as February, but the preparation for the
season happens from November through February; that's when teams are riding
together, putting in base miles and completing the training necessary to
have race-ready fitness in February. Also, many teams close their rosters
and order their clothing as early as December.
Who should attend?
Men, women, juniors - riders of all skill levels who are interested in
racing. Also, there are teams with riders as far away as Spokane, Olympia
and Portland, so even if you live outside of Seattle, this is still a great
opportunity to shop for your future team.
What to bring
A functioning road bike, helmet, water, some food, weather-appropriate
clothing, a couple of $'s and an extra tube in case you flat.
Ride format
Each week, a different team will lead this 2-hour ride around the south end
of Lake Washington. This is a social ride, at a conversational pace. The
ride may choose to stop for 5-10 minutes along the way, but otherwise, be
prepared for a continuous ride. These rides happen rain, wind, snow or
shine!
The rides leave from Pert's Deli (120 Lakeside Avenue, Seattle, 98122), in
the Leschi neighborhood. There is ample parking nearby. Please be at
Pert's by 9:20 for a 9:30AM departure.
