This e-mail was forwarded to me trough a series of
friends and fellow cyclists. As someone who raced at
the collegiate level many years ago I have to say that
I am quite shocked by Harm's "race report". It sounds
as though Dan misses the whole point of collegiate
cycling.
There have been plenty of better cyclists than Harm
that have gone through the NWCCC...however it appears
he leads in one category...ego.
Stay classy huskys...stay classy. You should be very
glad that Dan Harm represents UW.
Bonjour, Bonjour, Bonjour
This year I promised the Huskies I would race a few
times for them since it is my last year in school and
they also dropped bank to send me out to Collegiate
Track NATS so I could defend my titles, which I did,
barely.
The race started an hour late, which was not too fun
considering it was disastrously cold, but, finally we
were on our way. To be honest, I was a bit nervous
because I had no idea what level of talent a
Collegiate A race would contain. I knew I had an
advantage since I have raced Seward countless times,
but, again, I just did not know what was in store.
Well, at the start line I had a good indication of
what I was up against as I began to notice an
assortment of un-shaved legs, full length tights that
were a bit baggy in unfortunate areas, and hell, there
were even a couple dew-rags, so I knew they were all
jokers. But, I gave them all the benefit of the doubt
and just sat at the back of the field to watch how
they were all riding.
A couple of times I think people attacked, but I
couldn't tell because it seemed more like surges. Five
minutes into the race there was a prime, so I decided
to light it up and test the field out. I attacked at
the base of the climb and when I looked back I had
about 30 bikes lengths. Since I wasn't to keen on
holding a solo break for
55 more minutes I sat up and drifted back.
Well, the referees thought it would be grand to give
away another prime three laps later (I guess they were
trying to get us warm, because, damn, it was cold). I
did the same old thing and attacked again, this time
some guy held onto my wheel. He dragged himself behind
me to the line and then nipped me at the line because
I was getting a bit cocky. At this point I looked back
and the field was way back there, so I gunned it and,
go figure, the guy who nipped me exploded and nearly
stopped pedaling. Now I had a choice: try to solo
break for 50 minutes, or sit back up? Of course, since
I am who I am, I decided to put on a show and hit it
hard.
After about 15 more minutes I had a 20 second gap.
Then I got greedy again and took a spill going around
the sharp turn. The crash wasn't
bad: nothing broken, just a lot of blood. I got my
free lap, and they threw me in at about ten seconds
ahead of the field. Of course I was pissed as all hell
at this point, so I went ape shit and put about 30
seconds into the field after about three laps.
I still had 30 minutes left so I needed to chill the
hell out before I blew myself apart, so I just set a
good rhythm. With 10 minutes left I had put a minute
onto the field and just decided to hold it there to
the end. You can guess what happened, yes, I won. Woop
Woop. But, then again, I think I was the only CAT 1
there, which means I was totally sand-baggin'. But
nonetheless, I got bad-ass browny points for the
Huskies and was also propositioned by some Category C
women's racerwhich I lightly turned down, and then I
made my merry way back home so I could soak my wounds,
eat soup and drink tea.
Ohh, I did break my shoe, but at least I have cowboy
boots.
Dan Harm
