Frances,  I used Jaws for quite a while before I bought a complete/registered
version and it doesn't cost anything.  If I were your friend, I would choose
that route first to give it a try without any financial investment.  The only
limit is the number of keystrokes, but there are ways around that, too.  A
reader to help with some basic commands to start and then build from there
should get your friend started in the right direction.  Contact Services for
the Blind for some training or suggestions if your friend is eligible for that.
