RE: IDEA re-authorization
TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! Before next Wednesday, please make contact
with your Senators (listed below) who serve on the Senate Labor and
Human Resources committee or their Education staff member. (We have
included those Senators whose support is questionable at this time and
is needed.) If any of your clients (families of children who receive
services as a result of IDEA legislation) would do the same, please take
the time to encourage them. We've been advised that Congressional
representatives are not hearing from persons with disabilities or many
professionals about the potential loss of related services (e.g., audiology
and speech-language pathology), changes in personnel standards,
funding for personnel training, and discretionary programs.
ACTION NOW ON IDEA
Message
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), as we now know
it, is in serious danger. Your jobs, audiology and speech-language
pathology services for students, and university training and research
programs are in jeopardy. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED NOW!
On Wednesday, March 20, 1996, the Senate Committee on Labor and
Human Resources is scheduled to consider S. 1578, the IDEA
amendments of 1996. It is imperative that you contact your Senator (a
member of the Committee) to encourage the following:
1.Reauthorize IDEA now. It is a good law for children with disabilities.
2.Oppose reduction in related services, such as audiology and
speech-language pathology.
3. Maintain current personnel standards and ensure that
paraprofessionals are supervised by qualified professionals.
4. Maintain federal support for Part H, personnel preparation, and
research efforts.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Call, fax, e-mail (if available), or send a telegram.
2. If calling, ask for the education staffer (see name below). If not
available, ask for a legislative assistant. If not available, ask the
receptionist to take your message and relay it to the Senator before
Wednesday morning, March 20.
3. If faxing, e-mailing, or sending a telegram, ask that the message be
given to the Senator before Wednesday morning, March 20.
