     POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
     TECHNOLOGY ACCESS SPECIALIST
     Information Services/Office of Services to Students with Disabilities
     Oregon State University


     APPOINTMENT:       Full-time, 12-month, no rank, fixed-term
                        appointment

     QUALIFICATIONS:    Bachelor's degree required.  Detailed knowledge of
                        adaptive computer hardware and software, including
                        voice input and output, Braille printing, large
                        print displays and alternate switching;
                        demonstrated knowledge of issues associated with
                        the trend in computing towards graphical user
                        interfaces and World Wide Web technology and
                        familiarity with strategies to make these
                        technologies more accessible; demonstrated ability
                        to communicate, with patience and clarity,
                        technical information to students with disabilities
                        who may have little knowledge of or experience with
                        technology; ability to work with technical staff to
                        design cost-effective and sustainable solutions to
                        technology access challenges; basic working and
                        technical knowledge of computer hardware and
                        software; ability to work independently, be
                        self-directed, organized and resourceful; good oral
                        and written communication skills.  Preferred:
                        Master's degree in a related field.

     RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Technology Access Specialist will provide
                        leadership, technical direction and support to the
                        campus community in increasing the accessibility of
                        the Oregon State University's computing environment
                        to persons with disabilities; teach students how to
                        use adaptive computer devices; evaluate and
                        recommend technological solutions to faculty,
                        departments and programs needing assistance and
                        provide appropriate training to staff; install,
                        configure and trouble-shoot adaptive software
                        packages and/or other adaptive equipment; install,
                        maintain and upgrade public access computer
                        workstations for persons with disabilities; modify
                        vendor hardware and software to facilitate
                        accessibility; serve as a resource to the
                        classroom/lab team, the multimedia team and the
                        distance education team on issues of accessibility;
                        and actively research ongoing advances in the field
                        of adaptive technology.

     SALARY:            $29,000 for 12-month faculty appointment.
                        Appointment beyond minimum salary commensurate with
                        qualifications and prior experience.

     STARTING DATE:     August 15, 1996
