March 20-23, 1997: Asian Deaf Conference in California
The second triennial Asian Deaf Conference will be held
March 20-23, 1997 at the Universal City Hilton and Towers in
Universal City, California. This 2-1/2 day conference will bring
together Asian-Pacific, Southeast Asian, and American
communities, both deaf and hearing, to explore issues of direct
interest to their lives and professional work.
The conference theme is "Let's Break the Walls of Silence."
It will be devoted to cultural enrichment, empowerment, community
networking, and resource building across the Asian-Pacific,
Southeast Asian, and deaf communities, including professional
training and development.
A wide range of speakers, workshops, and small group
discussions address the domestic, academic, and professional
topics as they relate to diverse Asian cultures and communities,
American Deaf culture and community, Asian Deaf youth and their
parents/guardians. All individuals interested in these topics
including parents, professionals, youth, and adults are
encouraged to register.
The conference will be fully accessible, with sign language
interpreting services and assistive devices provided for all
business meetings and conference sessions.
Agenda items for the business meeting include the
establishment of a national Asian Deaf organization.
Social events include entertainment, a gala, and a banquet.
Exhibit booths and Asian Deaf & Hard of Hearing art gallery are
also included.
Preregistration will begin this summer. The information
package will include registration, banquet, gala, and family
program fees. Information about conference discounts for senior
citizens and students will be provided as well.

short walk away from the Universal Studios theme park, an 18-
