Re: Urgent Request for Information on
Assistive Technology
Members of the U.S. Senate are questioning why
children with disabilities need assistive technology in
order to benefit from education. The Office of Public
Affairs has been requested to assist Senate advocates
defeat this attack on assistive technology by providing
profiles of school-age children who currently use
assistive technology.
Specifically, I am seeking brief profiles of children
you know who use both low-tech and high-tech
devices. The profiles should include the name of the
child (first name and initial of last name is ok), age,
school level (i.e., preschool or second grade), type of
assistive technology including its approximate cost (if
possible), and a description of how the child has
benefited because of the assistive technology, and
how his or her opportunities would be limited
without such technology. Pictures of these children
would be great to have. Profiles of children who use
low-tech devices will also be particularly helpful.
If you have highlighted a particular child in one of
your brochures or newsletters, please fax a copy to
me, along with the information noted above. In
addition, if one of your child representatives uses
assistive technology, please send me information on
him or her.
Thank you for your assistance in gathering this
information. If you are able to provide one, or more
of these profiles, please fax this form back to me by
Friday, August 23, 1996. I'll follow up with you the
following week. Please give me a call if you have any
questions.
Thank you!
