Captioned Movie Clips on the Web!
The Web Access Project, a part of the CPB/WGBH National
Center for Accessible Media (NCAM), has been experimenting
with ways to provide captioned movie clips on the World Wide
Web. Six different captioned clips, in both the QuickTime(R)
and AVI formats, are now available at http://www.wgbh.org/ncam.
These movies are playable on either a PC or Macintosh.
NCAM is most interested to hear what you have to say about
its efforts to make movies on the Web accessible. Please download
a clip and let NCAM know what you think! Send your comments to:
geoff_freed at wgbh.org
For the curious, NCAM has uploaded instructions on how to
caption your own movie clips.
The Web Access Project also maintains a list of Web sites
which use the Web Access Symbol. Webmasters may use the symbol
(and its Alt-text tag and description) to indicate that their
sites have been designed with the needs of disabled Web surfers
in mind. The list, which is updated every two weeks, and the Web
Access Symbol are both available at NCAM's Web site
(http://www.wgbh.org/ncam). Additionally, you can get the symbol
via anonymous FTP at 198.147.175.20.
Check out some or all of the sites on the list. If you think
the sites have (or have not) been well designed, let the
webmasters know! If you know of a site which uses the Web
Access Symbol but is not yet on the NCAM list, please send a
message, including the URL, to:

Support for the Web Access Project has been received from
the Telecommunications Funding Partnership for People with
Disabilities, and The Boston Foundation. For further
