         October 16-18: Gallaudet Homecoming Conference
Techniques and Technology in the Education
Of Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The 1996 Gallaudet University Homecoming Conference,
"Techniques and Technology in the Education of Students who are
Deaf and Hard of Hearing will take place at the Gallaudet
University Kellogg Conference Center October 16-18. Those three
days will include three exciting events. There will be an all-day
pre-conference workshop on Wednesday, October 16 from 9:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. The workshop will focus on literacy for deaf
students, featuring keynote speaker Dr. Jane Kelleher Fernandes,
Gallaudet's Vice President for Pre-College National Mission
Programs, and will be led by experts, including Mr. Dave Schleper
and Ms. Janet S. Weinstock.

The conference itself begins with a welcome reception on
Wednesday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. In addition to concurrent
sessions, the conferences will feature two keynote presenters:
Mr. Philip W. Bravin, a 1966 Gallaudet graduate, and Dr. Cynthia
M. King, author of a textbook and reading series for deaf
children.

Bravin, until recently chief executive officer and
president of the National Captioning Institute (NCI), is former
chair and currently a member of Gallaudet's Board of Trustees and
of the Lexington Center Board of Trustees. He is the father of
three grown children who are deaf. Bravin will discuss
educational technology in the year 2000.

King is chair of the Department of Educational
Foundations and Research at Gallaudet University. Her
presentation will focus on the visually accessible interactive
media.

Exhibits/Electronic Playground is the third exciting part of
the week. There will be an opportunity for companies/organizations
to set up an exhibit booth and demonstrate products for deaf and
hard of hearing children and adults. Children are invited to attend
the electronic playground for FREE on either Thursday or Friday.

This conference is coordinated by University Conference
Management and co-sponsored by the following University units:
Academic Technology, College for Continuing Education, Distance
Education Programs, Educational Foundations and Research, Pre-
College National Mission Programs, and the Technology Assessment
Program.

                           Correction

The article "Gallaudet Consolidates Counseling and Mental
Health Services" (TFA Notes from All Over, Monday, August 19,
1996) contained two errors. Dr. Jo Ann Mackinson is a
psychologist and community consultant to the center, and not a
staff psychologist. Mr. (not Ms.) Chris Van Scott is a staff
psychologist. TFA apologizes for these errors.
