The Language Conundrum: Communication, Asst. Tech & Autism
3/8/02 - 3/9/02
Special Education Course No: SPED 033MVP
For students with autism, language, communication, and even literacy can be
a puzzle. Learning how to sort out the pieces of the puzzle and which types
of intervention is most appropriate in addressing the obstacles to learning
to communicate is crucial in addressing the adverse educational impact
created by autism. This class will focus on the inter-relationship of
language and communication for students with autism. Discussions will be
facilitated regarding how this relationship creates a frame for
intervention. Assistive technology as an intervention will also be
presented; however, this course will not be a technology-intense course.
Intervention strategies for language, communication, and assistive
technology will be presented as well as strategies found within approaches
such as TEACCH, FloorTime, and others. Other disorders having similar issues
will be mentioned only in context of those issues.
Target Audience: Special education teachers, regular education teachers,
SLPs, OT/PTs, administrators, parents, para-educators (*parents &
para-educators are STRONGLY encouraged to attend with an SLP from their
school district). Individuals should have a basic understanding of autism.
